All I Want for Christmas

Make My Wish Come True

There are very few holiday songs that make you want to rock out in Christmas PJs while singing your heart into a make-shift microphone. Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas” is one of them. From the age of 14, I have dedicated this song to a different boy every December 1st and have sung my lungs out in their honor throughout the remainder of each Christmas season.

But the reason I love this song has nothing to do with school-girl crushes. It has everything to do with the people who have been around during past Christmas seasons to belt the words with me. There is nothing better than being in a room with people you love throwing their heads back and giving a shout out to Santa Clause with their best Mariah Carey impressions. (If you are friends with me on facebook click here to see one of many awesome examples.)

In honor of my favorite holiday jam and Christmas memories, I did my first Christmas cover. Special thanks to Cari Stewart for the drums and back-up vocals.

Oh and I have a video this time! This was recorded with just a few of my favorite people who were around for last year’s holiday celebrations. Please notice my friend Erica’s Christmas makeup in honor of the winter season ha ha.

And there you have it. All I want for Christmas is you. Happy Holidays! Love Carl.

Welcome to One on One

Oh Hey Didn’t See You There

I honestly love the people that I work with. If it weren’t for my co-workers, I probably wouldn’t get out of bed in the morning…literally. I have a carpool that texts, calls, and gives inspirational speeches to help me drag my lifeless body out of bed and into the car by 7:45. And it doesn’t stop there. I don’t know anyone that gets personal street fighter tutorials from friends in their IT department or gets basketball coaching while playing endless PIG tournaments on the indoor basketball court. I once wanted to win a PIG tournament so bad that a co-worker spent the majority of his lunch break just re-bounding basketballs and showing me how to shoot.

These people have become some of my best friends over the past year. From saving skunks trapped in a trash can to flash mobbing office meetings there has never been a dull moment. Which is why it is so hard to see some of them go.

Over the past six months, a lot of my closest friends have graduated from the doors of One on One. In memory of the good times, here is a video I made of some of those co-workers I would consider to be company “legends.” Who needs boring, life-less employees when you could be hanging with the best of One on One?

Oh My Words (Original Song)

Times you should bite your tongue before you let someone bite your lip

I am one of those people who only learns things the hard way. This song/situation was no exception. I realized too late that I said the right words to the wrong person. As if that wasn’t enough, the conversation ended with me hitting my head on a set of monkey bars and falling off a playground. Lesson learned, song written. I can’t stop laughing when I think about it.

Oh My Words: Lyrics

Oh my words could travel cross the flecks that travel in your sky
I would say something so awful bold you’d think I’m bout to die
I would watch the scene unravel then I’d try to sew it up
Cause I hate to see a tap of hope get close to swallowed up.

And oh oh oh oh no
I step but my knees still shake
And oh oh oh this floor
It stops but it always sways
Cause I was wrong

There’s a tiny light above my head that keeps me up all night
It’s an idea fed with ticks and talks with teeth wound up too tight
It’s a toss, your turn, a sentence wrapped like sheets around my legs
A tie that seems so broken but I still can’t get away

And oh oh oh oh no.
I step but my knees still shake
And oh oh oh this floor
it stops but it always sways

And there’s something in the way
There’s something in the way our bodies fall
I was wrong
I was wrong

Dating Younger Men

Go Cougar: An Exclusive Interview with Erica Hawkins

This topic hits close to home, so I will try to tip-toe around it as best I can. Is there anything wrong with dating younger men? Yeah he may be the same age as your younger brother, but is it possible that an “old-soul” could be trapped inside that baby face? Erica Hawkins thinks so. To the point where it may even be exclusive.

Since the age of 18 she has made it a rule of thumb to ONLY date boys who have not yet reached the ripe age of 19. “Some say its bad, but how could something so bad feel this good?,” she stated in a recent interview shown below. And she truly believes it (Erica has sent out 3 different missionaries in the past two years.) An activist for these “freshmen sweethearts”, she is out to prove that not all men were born before 1987. You go girl.

Music Outlet – The Fall Edition

A Chex Mix of Live Music

Music Outlet

There is nothing better than live music, not only that but I believe there is nothing better than a chex mix of musicians getting together to play just for the love of it. That is why music outlet was started years ago and that is exactly why its still kicking today. Three weeks ago, Music Outlet came to Provo for the first time since school started and this next week it is making a come back.

There were some incredible musicians that played last time and will be doing an encore this Wednesday on the back porch of the Estate House on University Avenue. Some of these musicians include: Thomas Hall, Andy Allen, Lauren McFadyen, Ryan Wells, Erin and Rachel Simmons (pictured above), and Robert Carrol. Below is just one highlight from the concert to give you a sampler.

Oh Hello…Lauren McFadyen

I am a huge Elton John fan, so I absolutely loved Lauren McFadyen singing her “Benny and the Jets” cover. Accompanied by Marcus Barton, Chris Faires, and Tyler Allen this cover was honestly SO FUN to watch. Lauren happens to be an Applebees Karaoke Champion and it shows.

The next Music Outlet will be this Wed. Oct 12th at the Estate House. Don’t miss out!

The Same (Original Song)

Because I couldn’t figure out how to film myself singing directly into a web-cam to make you all feel uncomfortable

I have NEVER posted my music before, so I figured its better late than never. I am not much of a you-tuber web-cam musician so I apologize in advance that I will not be looking you directly in the eye from a video while you listen. Here goes…

Introducing Song #1: The Same. This is the first song I ever wrote on uke. It isn’t written for anyone specifically but is a combination of a few note-worthy summer nights I wish I could re-play.

The Same

Music and Lyrics By: Carly Walker

You laugh so hard and you hold me tight
I just cant breathe but I dont mind

Cause I love it when you hold me like your never gonna let me go

Its getting late and were talking loud
But I just dont mind staying after hours

Cause I love it when your talking like your never gonna let me go

Is it all right
Baby if we stay here all night
Just want to stay this way
Just want to stay the same

Your stumbling on all the word you said
And babe I just cant think of going to bed

Cause I love it
And I never want to let you go

Is it all right
Baby if we stay here all night
Just want to stay this way
Just want to stay the same

And other nights dont seem half as good
We never take the time just like we should
And baby doll dont know where you are
But were both still sitting, waiting, wishing on the same sad star

So is it all right
Baby if we stay here all night
Just want to stay this way
Just want to stay the same

Rebuilding the Provo Tabernacle

When you lose something that you can’t replace

When I was in high school, my dad had a job installing high-end home theater systems and programming remotes for “smart homes.” We didn’t have a lot of money, so my dad would work days and nights on the jobs he was given. One client in particular had a home near our neighborhood and took up most of his time. My dad worked late into the evening for months to set up this perfect “smart home.” It had a remote that literally controlled almost ALL the electronics in the entire house. You could move the chandelier up and down at the click of a button and set up movies in different rooms from the internet.

Provo Tabernacle Fire

A week before it’s big finish, I woke up to find my parents out on our deck in their pajamas with dark circles under their eyes. They didn’t say a word but just kept staring off into the distance. When I followed their eye path, I saw the beautiful home my dad worked on surrounded in flames. Everything my dad had worked so hard for was lost and I watched his pride completely dissolved in minutes.

I felt the same hopeless feeling back in December when I saw Provo residents gathered around the Historic Provo Tabernacle as it burned down. Built in 1883 this building was a “reminder of the pioneering spirit that built Utah” and was considered a historic treasure to the community. All the hard work that had been put into the building by our ancestors was destroyed. People walked home with their head hung low and many came to the conclusion that the building was past the point of saving.

A game-changing plan

Yesterday, at the LDS General Conference, President Thomas S. Monson announced that the Provo Tabernacle was going to be re-built into a temple. When he finished the announcement people let out a giant gasp with “oohs and ahs” ha. It was a miracle! Not only was the tabernacle going to be re-built, it was going to become something of even greater value.

The idea: re-build it

I think often times we have this idea that we have “lost everything” that we made a mistake that has somehow destroyed the entire structure of our lives. We made a wrong turn that took the value out of everything we worked so hard for. Lost in confusion and despair, we convince ourselves that we have nothing left to do but linger in a hopeless state.

Flashback to my Dad, he could have given up. Re-doing the home was an overwhelming, monotonous task. But he believed he could build it again and build it better. Just like members of the Provo community believe that the tabernacle can be saved and built into something more.

These buildings are a symbol of hope to the many who walk in doubt. An idea that instead of hanging your head low, you could look up and remember that nothing is lost until you give up. It may take longer to fix, it may be harder, but in the end wouldn’t you say it was worth it?

The Job Your Job Could Smell Like

One on One Goes Old Spice

One morning I found a flip cam on my desk with instructions from my boss to make a video for an upcoming conference. Have you ever had someone walk up to you and ask you to be funny on the spot? That’s what it felt like… and I panicked. Me, My friend Matty, the legendary Jeff Mills only had one day to pull this together so we decided to do a spoof off of the Old Spice commercials.

Things would have been great if.. A. Every special effect hadn’t gone terribly wrong and B. If we weren’t using a flip cam and balancing on moving office chairs (the camera didn’t have a zoom.) Luckily, two wrongs make a right and the video looked ABSOLUTELY AWFUL, so awful that it was almost funny. Mission accomplished. So here goes: One on One the job your job could smell like. Don’t freak out when you see how awesome these special effects are.

NEWS FLASH: Katie Pratt is Going Off the Market

Men, We Regret to Inform You

I happen to have a best friend that looks like a SUPER MODEL (pictured below) and is getting married in three weeks! There is only one problem…her up and coming wedding has caused severe depression to spread across the whole male population. It has also caused a decrease of stalkers contacting me in creative ways to get her number. I will miss that.

It wasn’t an easy road to filter through trillions of dudes and there were some almost barely even close runner-ups. So, in honor of the many men that are now having to throw the towel in and are currently de-friending her on face book, I thought we would re-visit a few of KP’s past relationships. This old video is golden so here goes:

A Tribute to the Those Who Tried

Props to TJ Nokleby

Congratulations to Katie Pratt and more especially TJ Nokleby for beating out Shawn White! You have the girl that men can now only dream of and the avenues is officially giving you props. Can’t wait for the wedding!

Scooter Dodgeball: How to Hit Your Co-Workers Without Having to Talk to HR

The Birth of Scooter Dodgeball

I would love to introduce you to the newest addiction in the office known as scooter dodgeball. And yes, its as simple-minded as it sounds. Literally dodgeball played on a scooter. Oh and don’t worry, even though it took absolutely no brain cells to make up the game, there are still arguments almost every day as to who started the whole ordeal. Regardless of its origins, here is how to play:

One employee rides as fast as they can on a scooter while 4 of their coworkers try to hit them as hard as they can with dodge balls. The goal is to either knock the person off the scooter or hit them super hard in the face. The person who can ride the scooter the most without getting hit wins.
